Moving to NanaimoFunny, relocating sounds exciting; moving, on the other hand, just sounds like a whole lot of work. But whatever the term, living in Nanaimo is well worth the effort it takes to move here. Words cannot describe our feelings as, after driving for five days from Ontario, we came across on the Horseshoe Bay Ferry knowing that we were not tourists enjoying this spectacular scene, we were residents coming home! These were our mountains, our islands, our ocean!
We recently met a couple from Minnesota who also visited Nanaimo and fell in love with it. They worked for several years to arrange their affairs so they too could be moving to Nanaimo, and now they have a website and a group, I'm Not From Here, for relocated professional in their 20's to 50's who have come here to live and work.
Moving TipsWhen you are getting ready to move, keep in mind "More and Less". More is for organization. The more organized you are on the moving-out end, the smoother and easier will be the moving-in end. Now is the time in your life to be anal! Make a numbered inventory list of all boxes. Label and over-label boxes with contents, where they go, and how they should be handled. Make an "Open First" box with things you'll need right away. Perhaps each family member will have their own Open First box. For excellent moving and packing tips, click here. Less is for what you should move to your new home. Now is the time to purge, and get rid of all that "stuff" you don't need. Give it away to someone who does need it, or sell it in a moving sale or on a site like Kijiji. Consider how much it will cost to move every item. Is the item worth that much to move, or can you a) do without it or b) replace it more cost effectively at the other end of the move? We often hear "I don't know why we brought ... with us." We have yet to hear "I wish we had brought ....". Your old things may not suit your new house or new lifestyle. Replacing that old sofa that was your parents', or alternatively, that your three teenagers abused and your two dogs slept on, can be really fun (and good for the Canadian economy, sort of like a civic duty.)
