East of NanaimoYou can do lots of things if you head east of Nanaimo. But don't plan on driving directly to them. If you look at at an overhead view of the city, you can see several islands scattered in the Harbour. Just a paddle away or a more leisurely trip on the Protection Connection will get you to Protection Island, a "suburb" of Nanaimo. Folks there enjoy the benefits of city sewers, but eschew cars in favour of foot, bikes or golf carts. A popular and tasteful destination any time of year, and visible with its blue roof across the Harbour, is the floating Dinghy Dock Pub.
Nanaimo Harbour has its own marine park on Newcastle Island (with its own passenger-only ferry that operates spring through fall). Hike, bike, picnic, camp or learn more about the history of Nanaimo in this magical spot. Cap off your day with a traditional salmon barbeque. We hear kayaking around Newcastle by full moon is spectacular. For a virtual visit courtesy of Nanaimo's Living Forest Campground, click here.
A twenty-minute BC Ferries ride will take you to our closest "Gulf Island", Gabriola Island. There are a myriad of things to see and do there, and it is an especially popular destination for cyclists.
If you're feeling Islands-bound, head to Vancouver for business or pleasure. One of our seaplane companies, Harbour Air or Sea Air, can have you at YVR Airport or right downtown in about twenty minutes. If you need a vehicle there, catch BC Ferries' Duke Point or Departure Bay Ferry.
If you want the excitement of the big city but not the hassle of big city driving, ride the Departure Bay/Horseshoe Bay Ferry as a walk-on passenger and hook up with transit in Vancouver. For a flat rate, you can get a day pass that allows you unlimited access to buses, Skytrain and Seabus. We did the Ferry + Transit thing for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and it was great! We are looking forward to doing that again to go to (-in no particular order and not all in the same day) Lonsdale Quay, Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, Granville Island (we like Granville Island beer, so we expect we'd like Granville Island), trendy Yaletown, and lots of places in between. Then there's all the general shopping, dining, theatre, and several professional sports venues. (Go, Canucks, go!) The picture of us below was taken in Robson Square, downtown Vancouver, during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
