Relocate to Nanaimo

Gary and Toni tell you how fabulous Nanaimo is so you will want to move here too...

Nanaimo's Geography

Mountains and Ocean and Trees (Oh, My!)

Nanaimo's geography features  a natural amphiteatre flanked by mountains, lakes and rivers, with a sheltered harbour dotted with islands as its focal point. Its diverse beauty ranges from its natural rocky wave-swept beaches, lush forest trails and secluded quiet coves to the man-made intriguing Old Quarter (dining and shopping heaven!), homes teetering on cliffsides overlooking lakes or ocean, and Nanaimo's quintessential people-watching spot - the Harbourside Walkway. Being on Vancouver Island means being a part of one of the world's most diverse ecosystems, and the city and the surrounding areas boast a fabulous network of protected parkland so everyone can access and enjoy the beauty and tranquility. The Weather (The Quintessential Canadian Preoccupation)

Nanaimo is tied with Victoria BC for having the country's most comfortable climate. It is Mediterranean-like, with mild wet winters, and dry sunny summers. Yes, we do get a lot of rain, but also lots of sunshine, no bitterly cold temperatures, very few cut-the-air-with-a-knife humid days, and not many mosquitoes, so pretty sweet compared with other places in Canada (not mentioning any names - okay, Ottawa and Winnipeg to name just two). And on a nice winter day, you can get a round of golf in and then hit Mount Washington for some sweet skiing.

People often mistakenly believe the Island doesn't have distinct seasons, but we do - the transitions between them are just more gradual than elsewhere in the country. We have spring with a cornucopia of bulbs and blossoms, summer with endless blue skies, fall with gold and green forests, and winter with fleece and gortex (but just like during the other three seasons, you can still hike, bike, paddle, golf, garden, surf, and dive in the winter and now you can ski!) Admittedly, fleece and gortex can be necessary any time of year, depending on where you are and what you are doing. Fashion-wise, just think of your fleece jacket with a water/windproof layer as a Vancouver Island twin set. Weather network.
