Nanaimo's EconomyThe synergistic result of Nanaimo's stunning natural setting and its unique mix of inhabitants is a creative, dynamic entrepreneurial spirit that co-exists perfectly with the laid-back Island lifestyle. In the last several years, Nanaimo has undergone a major population increase, which has helped to drive strong growth in most sectors of Nanaimo's economy.
Originally resource-based in nature (so to speak), Nanaimo's economy is now quite diversified, with significant activity in the fields of construction, retail, government and education, knowledge, arts and culture, and the professional, scientific and technical sectors. Tourism has become an important part of Nanaimo's economy with the new Cruise Ship Facility opening in 2011.
Nanaimo is known as the "Hub City". Its central location on Vancouver Island has meant it has develooped as an important retail, service and transportation centre for the central and northern parts of the Island.
